What issues have bubbled up in the past week?
Talking about the internet: twitter, mailing lists – is it the purview of this group to make a safe space of the internet?
Decided, no, it is not our interest to police the internet. problems are part of a toxic culture. We need to offer spaces for new culture of communication, start a culture shift within the movement.
The purview of this group is to facilitate conflict resolution for those who want it.
We’re not going to be the damage control team that runs to fix every hole in the dam. We’re going to figure out how to fix the whole thing. Create new spaces for communicating, etc.
How to effect a culture shift
Self-education links.
--Transformative justice vs. restorative justice
--Generation 5 – transformative justice
How to do self-education in this group?
---Day of training
---Symposium
---Multimedia session (library etc.)
---Encourage community gatherings for AO and Decolonize
---Training for trainers
---Safer spaces community gathering-style thing, Jan 10 circle-style thing…
---Series of trainings (e.g. regular FSU classes)
~~~~~Training day has a lot of resonance…
Marty: Concentric circles of buy-in. an affinity group that has agreements, people hold each other accountable – go to every single one of trainings,
Matt: Encouraging attendance at CGs. Culture shift needs to happen in incremental ways. Getting buy-in is the key. Agrees with what marty says
Katie: I like the affinity group idea. Occupy students like this idea, something positive and educational and ongoing… likes idea of training day.
Dennis: likes the idea of incrementally expanding group, trained, training. It’s not an affinity group, however…
Anna: Sharing notes—We shouldn’t put things up that are personal for people, issues of safety they bring to the group that they’d like to get advice on, etc. Need to talk about this group’s ways of being, maybe working like Decolonize and Anti-Oppression
Face-to-face discussion
The internet is not a place for this group
Mailing list should be about information, meeting times etc. not arguments
It’s fine to talk about ideas – personal disagreements, challenges about someone’s belief, is wrong
Marty: Movement-wide cultural shift -- agreements, training, accountability.
System of accountability
Transparency??
